Legacy system modernisation

We deliver legacy system modernisation without disrupting your business: code audits and architecture reviews, taking over application development from another vendor, database migration and step-by-step replacement with modern technology.

When a system needs modernising

Many companies run key processes on systems built over a decade ago. They work, but every change takes longer, technologies lose support, it is hard to find people who know the code, and integrating with new tools – including AI – is expensive or impossible.

Another common problem is losing vendor support: the company is left with a system with no documentation and no team able to develop it. Every outage becomes a business risk.

Modernisation does not have to mean rewriting everything from scratch. We usually propose a gradual approach: stabilise the system, carve out modules one by one and replace them with new ones, while the company keeps working as normal.

Warning signs

  • Simple changes take weeks.
  • The technology or database is no longer supported.
  • No documentation and no one who knows the system.
  • The vendor has ended the relationship.
  • The system cannot be integrated with new tools.
Scope

Application takeover and migration – scope

We start with a thorough diagnosis and then plan the modernisation to minimise risk and cost.

Code and architecture audit

We assess code quality, security, performance, dependencies and documentation, and point out risks and priorities.

Taking over application development

We take over maintenance and development from another vendor, rebuild documentation and tidy up environments.

Stabilisation and security

We fix critical bugs and vulnerabilities, update dependencies, and add monitoring and backups.

Database migration

We migrate data between database engines and versions (including PostgreSQL, MariaDB and MS SQL Server) with correctness checks.

Step-by-step module replacement

We carve features out into new modules and microservices, replacing the old system piece by piece.

Getting ready for AI

We expose data and functions via APIs so that the system can work with AI solutions.

Process

How legacy modernisation works

Every stage ends with a working system – no risky “switch everything over at once”.

  1. Free consultation

We learn about the system, its role in the company, known problems and expectations.

  2. Audit

We analyse the code, architecture, database and infrastructure and prepare a report with recommendations.

  3. Modernisation plan

We propose a strategy – stabilisation, migration or gradual replacement – with a schedule and staged quote.

  4. Delivery in stages

We implement changes in sprints, with automated tests and the ability to roll back.

  5. Maintenance and growth

After modernisation we provide maintenance, an SLA and ongoing development.

Technologies

Modernisation technologies

We modernise systems written in a range of technologies, migrating them to Java, Python, Node.js or modern PHP, with frontends in React or Angular. We work with PostgreSQL, MariaDB and MS SQL Server and run applications in containers with automated CI/CD.

  • Python
  • Node.js
  • PHP
  • React
  • Angular
  • PostgreSQL
  • MariaDB

Example use case

Taking over and modernising a system from a previous vendor

A company uses an order management system built by a vendor that has ended the relationship. There is no documentation, the technology is outdated and every change risks an outage.

After a code audit we stabilise the system, update dependencies and add backups and monitoring. We then migrate the database to a current version and gradually move modules to a new API-based architecture. The company keeps working on a functioning system the whole time, and the new modules can work with AI solutions.

An illustrative scenario showing the typical course and scope of such a project.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you take over application development from another vendor?

Yes. We audit the code and architecture, rebuild documentation and take over maintenance and development of the system.

Does modernisation mean rewriting the system from scratch?

Not always. We usually recommend gradual modernisation, which reduces risk and lets the company work without downtime.

What does a code audit involve?

We analyse code quality, architecture, security, performance, dependencies and documentation. The result is a report with risks and recommendations.

Is database migration safe?

We plan migrations with backups, tests on a copy of the data and post-migration correctness checks, with the ability to roll back.

How long does legacy modernisation take?

It depends on the size and condition of the system. After the audit we prepare a schedule split into stages, each ending with a working system.
